In class, we have talked about how gender identity is not as simply and easily defined as we imagine. What it means to "be a man" or how "femininity" is defined may change from place to place and differ over time as well. For instance, expectations for women are much different in the United States today than they were in the 1950s. For this assignment, I want you to conduct some research into the changing ideas we have about gender identity.
Instructions:
You can not pick modern America. Otherwise, you have two options so select one of the following:
1. Research how a certain gender is defined in two different time/places. For instance, what does it mean to "be a man" or how was "manhood/masculinity" defined in Native American cultures compared to Sparta. Or describe "womanhood" and "femininity" in the Protestant colonies compared to ancient Greece.
2. Research how both genders were defined in a single time/place. For instance describe the roles of both a male and female in Victorian England.
It is up to you how you would like to present this information. You may type/write a paper describing your two research topics (I expect a solid, detailed paragraph for each) or you may complete a powerpoint/slides presentation (I expect detailed information and visuals).
